SchemaBounce vs Fivetran: Which CDC Platform Is Right for You?
Managed Connectors vs. A Rate You Can Read Before You Sign
Fivetran gives you pre-built managed connectors with 5-minute sync intervals. SchemaBounce gives you sub-second CDC and publishes every rate it charges. They solve the same core problem, moving data reliably, but the right choice depends on whether you optimize for breadth or speed.
The Short Version
| Dimension | Fivetran | SchemaBounce |
|---|---|---|
| Latency | 5 min minimum | Sub-second CDC |
| Pricing | MAR-based, no published per-MAR rate | Consumption-based ($75/env + $25/M events, free tier) |
| Transforms | Basic in-platform SQL | Python with 30+ built-in functions |
| Schema Management | Manual drift handling | Kolumn IaC (plan/apply/destroy, drift detection) |
| Connectors | Pre-built managed | Databases + SaaS + REST/webhooks |
| Best For | Broad SaaS coverage, minimal config | Real-time workloads, cost optimization, complex transforms |
Latency: Minutes vs. Milliseconds
Fivetran uses configurable polling intervals with a 5-minute minimum for most connectors. Paying more can increase frequency, but sub-second capture is not available.
SchemaBounce reads directly from database transaction logs and delivers changes in under a second, the log-based capture method that keeps latency independent of table size.
Why it matters: The difference between 5 minutes and sub-second isn't incremental, it changes what's possible. Real-time dashboards, fraud detection, event-driven workflows, and operational alerting all require data that's current, not 5 minutes stale.
If 5-minute intervals work for your reporting needs, Fivetran's approach is simpler. If you're building anything that reacts to production state in real time, SchemaBounce is the only option.
Pricing: What Each Side Publishes
Fivetran: Monthly Active Rows
Fivetran bills Monthly Active Rows, and it does not publish a per-MAR rate. Its pricing page, its usage-based pricing docs and its own pricing blog all describe a per-connection rate on a declining curve without giving the rate. Every Fivetran dollar figure in circulation, including the ones this page used to carry, is somebody's extrapolation from a number the vendor never disclosed. Run your own connectors through Fivetran's estimator and use what it gives you.
Two things Fivetran does publish are worth knowing. The $12,000 minimum applies to the annual contract; monthly pay-as-you-go carries no annual minimum, only a $5 per connection monthly minimum. And the free plan is not a trial: 500,000 MAR a month, ongoing.
A MAR Is Not an Event
A row that changes a thousand times in a month is one MAR and a thousand events. Fivetran counts the row. We count each change. On the CDC-heavy workloads this page is about, those two counts differ by orders of magnitude, in a direction set entirely by how often your rows change. That is why there is no single head-to-head total below. Count your own changes first, then price both sides against that number.
SchemaBounce: Events
$75/month per pipeline-enabled environment plus $25 per million events. The free tier covers the first 1,000 events a month. Volume discounts start at 10M events (15% off), then 50M (25%) and 100M (30%). Each discount applies to the whole event bill, not only the events above the threshold.
Worked example: 15M events = $393.74/month = $4,724.88/year.
At 100M monthly events the bill is $1,824.99/month, after the 30% volume discount.
What We Cost at Each Scale
Every figure below is all-in: the events plus one pipeline-enabled environment, on the free agent tier. There is no Fivetran column because Fivetran publishes no rate to fill it.
| Monthly events | SchemaBounce, all-in |
|---|---|
| 2M | $1,499.76/year |
| 50M | $12,149.88/year |
| 500M | $105,899.88/year |
Why it matters: SchemaBounce's consumption model scales with actual data activity. No minimum spend, no surprise bills from high-update-frequency tables, and no sales call to find out the rate.
Transforms
Fivetran offers basic SQL transformations within the platform: column renaming, filtering, type conversions. For anything more complex, you need dbt or external tools. Transformation logic ends up split across multiple systems.
SchemaBounce supports full Python transforms with 30+ built-in functions: aggregations, string manipulation, date handling, regex, hashing. Deduplication, derived fields, API enrichment, complex business logic, all within the pipeline. See how to mask PII in real-time data pipelines for a worked example.
Centralized transformation logic. Fewer moving parts.
Schema Management
Fivetran handles schema changes reactively. New columns auto-propagate; removed columns are preserved; type changes can break syncs. No version control, no audit trail.
SchemaBounce includes Kolumn IaC: define schemas in version-controlled HCL, detect drift automatically, preview changes before applying. Schema changes go through Git, code review, and planned deployment. See schema drift detection for the failure mode this prevents.
create "postgres_table" "customers" {
schema = "raw"
name = "customers"
columns = {
id = { type = "BIGINT", primary_key = true, auto_increment = true }
email = { type = "VARCHAR(255)", not_null = true, unique = true }
created_at = { type = "TIMESTAMPTZ", default = "CURRENT_TIMESTAMP" }
}
}
For teams managing hundreds of tables, this is not optional tooling: it's the difference between controlled evolution and chaotic drift.
Connectors: Breadth vs. Focus
Fivetran wins here. Pre-built managed connectors covering mainstream SaaS tools, databases, and cloud storage services. Connect and forget.
SchemaBounce covers the most common sources: native CDC for PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, and SQL Server, the database CDC sources documented in our connector reference. SaaS connectors (see the connector reference for the current list). REST API and webhook support for everything else.
If you need to sync Salesforce, HubSpot, Zendesk, and 10 other standard tools, Fivetran's breadth saves engineering time. If your primary sources are databases and popular SaaS platforms, SchemaBounce has you covered, and you're not locked to a connector roadmap you don't control.
When to Choose Fivetran
- You need broad SaaS connector coverage across many standard tools
- You want zero operational overhead: fully managed, no infrastructure
- 5-minute latency is acceptable for your reporting and analytics
- Enterprise compliance certifications (SOC 2, HIPAA, PCI-DSS) are table stakes
- You're a large enterprise that has already budgeted for the spend
When to Choose SchemaBounce
- You need sub-second latency for real-time dashboards, fraud detection, or event-driven workflows
- You want the rate before you sign: every SchemaBounce figure on this page is on a public pricing page
- You need complex transforms without spawning separate dbt projects
- Schema management and versioning are critical for your operations
- Your primary sources are databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, SQL Server)
- You have engineering resources comfortable with Python and CLIs
The Hybrid Approach
Many teams run both:
- SchemaBounce for database CDC (low latency, high volume)
- Fivetran for SaaS connectors (breadth, convenience)
The overlap in cost is smaller than using either tool alone for everything.
The Bottom Line
Fivetran and SchemaBounce are not direct competitors. Fivetran optimizes for breadth and simplicity. SchemaBounce optimizes for speed and cost.
Choose Fivetran for managed SaaS connector coverage with minimal effort. Choose SchemaBounce for real-time CDC, Python transforms, schema versioning, and transparent pricing.
